Workshop: Ambrotypes and Tintypes

From July 21, 2014 through July 25, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House

Ambrotypes and tintypes are the hottest alternative processes used in fine art photography today. In this intensive five-day workshop, participants will be guided through the basics of making these unique positive wet-collodion images by Mark Osterman, internationally recognized as a modern master of the collodion process.

You will learn how to cut and clean glass plates, coat glass and metal plates with collodion, sensitize, expose, and process the final image. Tinting and special burnishing techniques pioneered by Osterman will also be taught.

The opportunity to view rare, original ambrotypes, tintypes, and original collodion era cameras from the George Eastman House collection makes this workshop a particularly fulfilling experience. Each participant will receive a copy of the new Scully & Osterman basic collodion manual, which includes formulas and sources of supply, as well as additional wet plate era readings pulled from the research library.

Audience: Limited to six, this five-day workshop is suitable for fine art photographers, educators, and anyone interested in the evolution of photography. No experience necessary.

Tuition: $1200/$1100 members, plus $200 materials fee
