Photographic Process Identification Workshop 2015

The Image Permanence Institute is hosting a five-day workshop on Photographic Process Identification at its facilities at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. The dates for the workshop are June 15-19, 2015.
IPI provides a holistic approach to image-based print process identification by examining the intertwined relationships between print technologies, aesthetics, and use. Photographic, photomechanical, and digital prints are made of a wide variety of materials including plastics, papers, glass, metals, pigments, dyes, and organic substances like gelatin, albumen and polymers. The appearance of a print is directly tied to its physical properties and the materials from which it is made. Also, it’s important to place the use of materials and technologies in a cultural and historical context to further gather identification clues. This workshop will teach participants to identify every mainstream image-based print process, from the daguerreotype to the inkjet print, via the study of their component materials, structures, aesthetics, and historical and cultural uses.
The workshop topics include:
- History of photographic technologies and materials
- Cultural and aesthetic history of image-based printing processes
- Examination tools and lighting techniques for print identification
- Identification methodologies
- The relationship between component print materials, layer structure, image, and aesthetics
- Key identification traits of photographic, photomechanical, and digital print processes
- The stability and preservation of photographs and digital prints
Tuition for the workshop is $150. Participants are responsible for all travel, room, and board expenses. Since attendance is limited to 15 participants, we are asking that applications be submitted for consideration. Attendees will be selected based on order of receipt as well as the need for a diversity of institution types, institutional roles, and geographic representation. Early application is highly recommended.
